Latest Project 3

Sheffield Project

When you have combined various projects over the last four months with the concept of creating a map based directory for a region, and finally you get a beta version you need to polish it off. The Sheffield Project is a progression from our first directory based map project. You can view that project here.

The new improved version has some features that we have perfected, which makes creating similar looking (and functioning) web directories very quickly. Using some cloning technology, we can recreate this sample in minutes. The changes that need applying is of course styling, location, submit and display. These can all be edited and applied to give you a specific looking directory, with the map with multiple pins working effortlessly.

Also on the SBD we have created a multiple tab system, where it is easy to display the data from the submission on tagged tabs, allowing for a more compact display, but loads of additional content, should you so require. The site is not completed, but it is going well. We plan to introduce a Jomres styled submission form, with multiple tabs for stages. We have used this tabbed system in the potal page, creating an easy process of adding additional sections as we continue to add area specific functionality to this site.

Development

We had already previously mentioned that the SBD project will get a property section added to it as well. I have started the ball rolling with this, and have installed the theme and functionality on test space at the moment. The theme actually looks quite good, and despite from some map functions we want to change, there is not that much to do to the script to make it functional. Expect this feature included in the site when we finally go live with it.

We have already had some disucssions about additional sections we could add and style to fit to this site, but as we have some outstanding projects we will first allow the existing areas we have included to be used and populated. So expect a delay in future developments for a couple of months at least.

WordPress Maps

The last four months have been such a journey of development. What started off with a simple concept has now developed into a clone version of a specialist map based directory. The path for this has not been easy, considering that we did not have any idea of how to create such a map based result.

The map search facility, by category, is the main development on the site. We have experimented with various map mashups, displaying the same data in different ways and creating as much diversity as possible. The training section add on, especially the tabbed view of the single page have also created great opportunities in increasing the use of the website.

At the moment the submit page is still contained within a single page, but we are going to attempt and move this on to a tabbed submit form as well. This is after the Joomla project we have done, and having seen how they incorporate the submission process. The only difference being we would still like to contain the submit file to a single file that needs editing.

Geocode on submission

One of the very clever things R has done with integrating the submit process and the geocoding process. If we get the correct readings from the client at the time they add their details, we can store the laitude longitude coordinates within our database, and as we have the coordinates “on file” we don’t require an API key, or geocoding to get the map to display. Quite nifty.

The idea of including a visual editor was crafted with E and the Joomla Map project. The Business Directory sub section doesn’t require a login at the moment, so you can try the feature. Just click here to go to the submit form. Fill in the adress details and check the map appear below the details. The pin is draggable, including in streetview. When you submit, the latitude coordinates collate the reading from where the user left the pin. Crafty, but effective. ;-)
