The Business Directory Listings web project has found a new purpose, as a webmaster tools directory. The reason for not moving forward with the project was in relation to the quality of the content. We have used an automated populating process on one of the web directories we created, GP Surgery. Although it is possible to publish countless pages of useless data, we failed to see how that will have any use to anyone. The domain is active, and have some good search results around it, so the decision was made to have a trial with the latest version of DirectoryPress, version 6, and make a webmaster tools directory.
Not another webmaster tools directory I hear you sigh. We have been talking for some time to create a framework where we can just store links to websites we find interesting. This process is quick and uncomplicated to maintain, and I have actually been having some ”fun” in creating new categories and listings. The webmaster tools directory as such will be nothing more than a collection of websites bookmarked whilst looking for ”stuff” online.

We needed to use the latest version of DirectoryPress on a live site. The webmaster tools directory gives us that opportunity. We have developed some niche plugins that support the wordpress web directories, and as most of these were developed using the older version of the wordpress directory theme, we wanted to ensure we can actually integrate our solutions into the new versions as well. The first test function is the fetch meta plugin.
This plugin adds the integration between the url of the listing, their meta tags and the All In One SEO plugin. We wanted to use the url to ”fetch” the meta tags of that url, and include their description, keywords and title within the database fields of the SEO plugin. Manually this is working a charm, and really easy to get listings done quickly. It also works on some of the DirectoryPress 5 project we have, most notably the Sheffield Business Directory project.
The final stage is now complying with WordPress standards, create this plugin and launch it as a free plugin. Then we can move towards the next one.
WebMaster Tools Directory Categories
The WebMaster Tools Directory will have a lot of varied categories for a start. One of the processes we would like to test is the process of moving categories, within the framework of a WordPress web directory. At a later stage we will start moving these categories into sequences that makes more sense. The resulting 404 errors, or the lack of them, should help with this process to see how effective it is to manage thousands of categories in sub sections.
We have already modified the category view of a MoviePress project, and will also change eventually the display of the categories. It is just NOT that importanat at the moment as this WebMaster Tools Directory needs content now. This project will only start being a decent search engine offering once the listings reach in excess of 1000. Minimum. At the current pace of populating this, it is going to take some months to get to that specific target number of pages. As these will all be indexed manually and selected for the specific category, the overall value of the site will be reflected by users when they eventually find this webmaster tools directory.
